Bootstrapping or as Guy Kawasaki puts it: Plan B for Fund Raising

OPEN Forum by American Express OPEN » Blog Archive Plan B for Fund Raising

I just read Guy Kawasaki's blog post today on the OPEN Forum. Excellent as usual!

He touches on the typical steps for fundraising through VCs (Plan A) and the pitfalls and then goes onto Plan B (the better bootstrapping approach, which is in essence, don't quit your day job and build your company with as little money as possible).

For another excellent read, you can also see his book, The Art of the Start. Great read!

An experienced Private Equity company run by a very successful man, Andrew Filipowski

SilkRoad Equity Company Information

Just thought I'd post about an excellent private equity company I have known about for a while, SilkRoad Equity, run by the very successful Andrew "Flip" Filipowski. (How many other people can say they sold a company to a large technology company, CA, for a dew billion dollars?) They invest in a wide range of opportunities focusing on those with high growth potential and strong management. They have an extensive portfolio of companies and what really impresses me is the following statement from their site:

We do not acquire businesses with a predefined exit strategy; rather, we focus on the entry strategy.  Beginning with a deep appreciation for the employee skill sets and customer relationships, we are intent on nurturing and supporting a company's growth and enhanced value.

Now, how many other private equity companies have you seen with anything similar to that on their website?

If you are searching for capital and have high growth potential and strong management, make sure SilkRoad is at the top of your list!

Much Success!

Featured presenters:

Investors Without BordersIWB will describe a new form of syndicated, remote mini-lending and  investment in a Web 2.0 format.  It's a web-based, peer-to-peer lending platform equipped with social networking tools, a credit/reputation building system, and investment and loan management tools to link borrowers and lenders across the globe.

This lending platform will provide a new channel for monitored capital flows to small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing markets.

The goal: To attract socially responsible investors, Diaspora members (migrants living abroad), and philanthropists - giving individuals around the world the ability to browse and fund rated SME loan requests with online investments as small as $100.  It's a low-cost investment mechanism that may shape the multi-billion dollar flow of capital from emigrants and socially responsible investors to developing countries -  and influence the foreign assistance policies of countries and major NGOs.

TRX:  This spin-off of Techno-Sciences, a 30+ year old company transitioning from research to engineering solutions, focuses on remote, wireless tracking and monitoring of people in high risk circumstances.

GeoRadio:  Entertainment content company Gotham Studios is developing a GPS triggered, location-based advertising and entertainment network for mobile devices.

Three panelists and the Forum audience then will discuss the following questions:

- How will the companies be viewed by investors and customers?

- How well do the startups view their markets?

- Are they ready for market?

- What should investors consider in rating the startups?

- What should the startups alter in their plans?

Don't miss this exciting and educational event - RSVP today:  www.mitef.org.

** 04/29 StartupLab: Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles

Now don't you wish you had a Facebook? or Facebook gets another $40 million!

Just saw this on the Silicon Valley Business Journal website:
Report: Investor puts $60M into Facebook

so this social networking thing isn't just a fad! ;-)

$300 million ($240M from Microsoft) invested in Facebook in the last 2 months.  Not bad at all!
